For less than the cost of a Big Mac, fries and a Coke, you can buy a loaf of fresh bread and some good cheese or roast beef, which you will enjoy much more.

    This makes a delicious breakfast bread or as a a snack when topped with ice cream.

    INGREDIENTS

    DOUGH:
    * 2/3 cup warm milk (70° to 80°)
    * 1 egg yolk
    * 1/4 cup butter, softened
    * 1/4 cup applesauce, room temperature
    * 1/3 cup sugar
    * 1/2 teaspoon salt
    * 2-3/4 cups bread flour
    * 2-1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast

    TOPPING:
    * 1/4 cup butter, cubed
    * 3 tablespoons sugar
    * 1 tablespoon milk
    * 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    * 1/8 teaspoon salt
    * 6 tablespoons sliced almonds

    DIRECTIONS

    • Prepare the dough in a bread machine pan as suggested by the manufacturer. Choose the Dough cycle, adding about 2 tablespoons of water or flour, as needed.
    • Once the dough is ready, turn it on a floured surface and deflate. Divide it into two then roll each one to a 6-inch circle. Place it over greased baking sheets. Cover and leave it to rise in a warm place to double or for half hour.
    • Prepare the topping in a small saucepan, combining butter with sugar, milk, cinnamon and salt. Set it over low heat, stirring until butter has melted. Leave it to simmer for a minute. Once done, remove from heat and allow cooling for 5 minutes.
    • Using the tip of a wooden spoon, make a quarter inch depression at the center of each loaf. Brush it with butter mixture then sprinkle with almonds. Place it into the oven and bake for about 20 minutes at 375 degrees F or until golden brown.
    • Cool the loaves for 10 minutes and serve warm.
